Digitl Pastures

Technology Partner to Farms and Ranches

This AI is trained to think like we do: a long-term technology partner to farms and ranches. Ask about systems, growth, operations, and how Digitl Pastures partners with you. Press Enter or click Send.

Why We Exist

This website is more than a collection of interactive tools. It was built to explain and simplify what actually happens behind successful direct to consumer farm sales. Tools like the shipping estimator, profitability calculator, bundle builder, pricing optimizer, and automation demos show how the pieces fit together. They can also be used as real planning tools. We share them openly.

Digitl Pastures began with a single opportunity. In 2014, I was hired by a grass fed beef ranch on the Arizona Strip. These were real working cowboys who cared deeply about their land and animals. My background was in technology and custom cabinetry. They asked me to help build their direct to consumer beef operation. Together, we went from roughly one hundred cattle per year to more than five hundred, with over one million dollars in direct sales plus a strong wholesale partnership. Seeing what a well built digital system could do changed my life.

What I learned was straightforward. Farmers and ranchers do not have time to become experts in DNS, website infrastructure, CRM systems, automations, email deliverability, business phone compliance, payment processing, inventory logic, customer service workflows, review systems, and the constant cycle of software updates. They are already working full time growing real food. Without proper digital infrastructure, most small producers stall out or spend tens of thousands of dollars on agencies and contractors who do not understand agriculture. Not to mention the technology implemented 5 years ago is now old.

Digitl Pastures exists so that never happens again. We manage the entire digital operation for farms and ranches that want to sell directly to customers in a professional, scalable, and profitable way. You do not owe us percentages or profit shares. There is no commission structure that grows when you grow. You pay a predictable monthly fee while we build, manage, maintain, and update everything required to run a modern direct to consumer business. Our only objective is your long term success.

We believe in local food economies built on stewardship, sustainability, and honest work. Farmers and ranchers should thrive without needing to become experts in digital systems. That is why this company exists. We take the digital burden so you can focus on your land, your animals, and your customers.

An Example of What Goes Into Shipping Frozen Meat

This interactive example illustrates the variables farms and ranches must account for when shipping beef, including distance, order size, seasonality, packaging, and carrier costs. For demonstration purposes, all calculations originate from St. George, Utah. Digitl Pastures builds and manages systems like this as part of a farm's core operations.

These numbers are ballpark estimates based on typical UPS-style rates, basic insulated boxes, liners, and dry ice. This is roughly what a customer would need to pay if all shipping is passed through to them. If you want to offer "free shipping," this is the cost you would be absorbing for an order of that size.

This interactive calculator shows what it takes to run a profitable ranch in your specific scenario. Choose your finishing strategy, acreage, location, and breed—then see the real numbers: costs per head, break-even pricing, and profit potential at different price points.

Cattle graze on pasture for 15-18 months, then grain-finished for 60-90 days. Balanced approach with good marbling and moderate land needs.
Pasture grazing with grain finishing period
Moderate land requirement
Medium time to finish (17-20 months)
Good marbling and quality
Balanced cost and timeline
$2.75/head/day
Feedlot
Cattle primarily fed hay/grain in confinement with limited pasture access. Requires least land, fastest finish, but needs infrastructure investment.
Confined feeding with hay/grain
Lowest land requirement
Fastest time to finish (14-16 months)
Requires feedlot infrastructure
Highest daily cost but shortest timeline

What You're Still Responsible For

We handle all the technical infrastructure and automation, but you still run your actual business operations. Here's what stays on your plate:

We're not taking over your business. We're giving you the tools to run it efficiently while you focus on what you do best.

Custom Systems Built for Real Farm Operations

We design and maintain custom software for farms, ranches, and processors when off-the-shelf tools break down. Scheduling, processing portals, inventory, logistics, automation, and reporting—all built to match how your operation actually runs.

Example 1: Custom Processing Portal for Partner Butcher

Most custom butchers rely on email threads, PDFs, paper forms, and manual payment tracking. This creates errors, delays deposits, and consumes staff time. We built a unified processing portal where customers schedule processing, submit detailed cut instructions, and pay deposits in one place. Staff manage orders, adjustments, refunds, reporting, and documentation from a single dashboard.

Outcome: Fewer mistakes, faster payments, reduced admin work, and clearer communication between customers and staff.

Example 2: This Platform as a Working System

Most website builders are designed for static pages and simple forms. They cannot support complex operational logic, simulations, or interactive tools needed by modern farm businesses. We built this platform from scratch to demonstrate what is possible when software is designed around real operational needs, not templates. The tools and examples on this site reflect the same systems we build for partners.

Outcome: Partner education, lead generation, and onboarding automation built directly into the platform.

Understanding Email Deliverability

Configure your DNS records to ensure emails reach customers

How Business Email Actually Works

When you send an email from [email protected], multiple DNS records work together to make sure it reaches your customer's inbox. Missing even one record can cause emails to fail, land in spam, or make your domain look unprofessional.

Below are the DNS records that power business email. Toggle them on/off to see what happens when your DNS isn't configured properly.

A Record
Points your domain name to your server
Name/Host:
@
Value:
192.0.2.1

Connects your domain name to the server hosting your website's code

MX Record
Tells email where to go
Name/Host:
@
Value:
10 mail.yourdomain.com

Directs incoming email to your mail server so customers can reach you

CNAME
Makes www work
Name/Host:
www
Value:
yourdomain.com

Ensures www.yourdomain.com and yourdomain.com both work for visitors

DKIM
Proves you sent the email
Name/Host:
default._domainkey
Value:
v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=MIGfMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GN...

Digital signature that proves your emails aren't fake or spoofed

SPF
Authorizes your email provider
Name/Host:
@
Value:
v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all

Tells email providers that Google Workspace is allowed to send emails for you

DMARC
Protects against email fraud
Name/Host:
_dmarc
Value:
v=DMARC1; p=quarantine; rua=mailto:[email protected]

Tells email providers to quarantine suspicious emails pretending to be from you

Business Email Setup

When you set up [email protected] or [email protected], you're creating professional email addresses that match your domain. This requires proper MX records and email authentication (DKIM, SPF, DMARC) to ensure deliverability.

What Breaks Without Proper DNS

Missing A records mean your website won't load. Missing MX records mean you can't receive email. Missing DKIM/SPF/DMARC means your emails land in spam or get rejected. Every record matters.

Trusted Partnerships

GrazeCart

GrazeCart

Preferred Partner

The 7 Hitzfield brothers own and operate Seven Sons Farm. Frustrated that Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, GoDaddy, and others didn't work the way farms and ranches needed, they built GrazeCart from the ground up—owning the code themselves. We met them at a Red Devon conference in Dubuque, Iowa, and we became one of the very first users. GrazeCart has never seen anyone doing everything we do for farms and ranches—most partners handle websites or marketing or email automations, but we recognized farmers and ranchers have no time to get on a computer. Building and managing everything for them is the niche nobody else fills.

Utah State University

Utah State University

Accelerator Program

USU's Accelerator Program provides technology resources to rural farms and ranches. Through extensive collaborative meetings, they recognized the unique value we provide—comprehensive ongoing management that ensures operations succeed long after initial setup. Our work helps them qualify for future grants while filling a critical gap: farmers and ranchers need someone who handles everything, not just one piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a fractional CTO?

It means we handle all the technology for your operation. Domain, email, website, automations, integrations—everything. You don't need to hire a tech team or figure this stuff out yourself. We just take care of it.

Why would a farm or ranch need this?

Because you're busy. You're raising animals, fulfilling orders, answering customer questions. The last thing you need is to spend hours trying to fix email deliverability or figure out why your website form isn't working. That's where we come in.

What's actually included?

Domain and DNS management, Google Workspace, your website, CRM, email and SMS automations, payment processing, compliance stuff like A2P registration, Google Business Profile, ongoing support. If it's technology-related and it helps your operation run better, we handle it.

How is this different from hiring a web developer?

Developers build something and move on. We stick around. When your emails stop sending, when you need a new feature, when something breaks at 9pm on a Saturday—we're the ones who fix it. It's ongoing partnership, not a one-time project.

Do I need to know anything about technology?

No. That's kind of the whole point. You shouldn't have to think about DNS records or API integrations. You focus on your farm, we focus on making sure all the technology works the way it should.

How long does setup take?

Usually 4-6 weeks to get everything transferred, configured, and running smoothly. Domain transfer, Google Workspace setup, website build, automation configuration, payment processing—it all takes time to do right.

What if something breaks?

We fix it. That's part of the service. No extra fees, no ticket system, no waiting three days for a response. If your website goes down or emails aren't sending, we handle it.

Can you work with my existing GrazeCart site?

Yes. We were one of GrazeCart's very first users, and we're their official preferred partner. We can take over management of what you already have, or we can start fresh if that makes more sense.

How do you keep emails out of spam?

Proper DNS configuration. DKIM, SPF, and DMARC records tell email providers your messages are legitimate. Without these set up correctly, your order confirmations and shipping updates end up in spam. We make sure they're configured right.

What makes this different from other services?

Most companies do one thing—websites, or marketing, or email. We do all of it. GrazeCart told us they'd never seen anyone doing what we do. We just recognized that farms and ranches need someone who handles everything, not just pieces.

Do you require contracts?

No. You can leave whenever you want. Nobody's ever left, but that's because we try to add value every month, not because they're locked in.

Do you only work with farms and ranches?

Yes. We managed a grass-fed beef ranch in Southern Utah for years. We understand the challenges, the tight margins, the time constraints. That experience matters when you're trying to help someone succeed.
